We, the undersigned residents of Michigan, urge you to immediately bring Senate Bill 701 (SB 701), the Medical Debt Protection Act, to the House floor for a full and fair vote.

Whereas, medical debt is the leading cause of bankruptcy in Michigan, affecting over half a million of our friends, neighbors, and families; and

Whereas, current laws allow for crushing interest rates, wage garnishment, home foreclosures, and other extreme collection actions that trap Michiganders in a cycle of poverty; and

Whereas, the Michigan Senate has passed SB 701 with a unanimous, bipartisan vote of 35-0, demonstrating that this is not a partisan issue but a moral one; and

Whereas, the Medical Debt Protection Act would provide immediate relief by:

Capping interest and late fees on medical debt at 3% annually.

Providing a 90-day grace period before any interest or fees can be charged.

Banning extreme collection actions like wage garnishment, property liens, home foreclosures, and arrest over medical debt.

Therefore, we call on you to prioritize the health and financial stability of Michigan families over the interests of debt collectors. Do not let this critical legislation die in committee.

Vote YES on SB 701. Bring it to the floor. Pass it now.
